Where to Eat in Monterey

It’s no surprise that upon arriving in a new city most of our exploration efforts go towards experiencing as many good food spots as humanly possible — we can only eat so much after all!

Following an incredible tour of some of the most prominent culinary cities in the country last fall, our taste buds were over the moon. It only seems fair that we share with you the restaurants and coffee shops that stole the spotlight for us.

Let’s blame it on the dreary Pacific Northwest weather this time of year, but we thought we should start with a sunny place, if only to transport us to warmer days.

Monterey, California is a charming seaside community about 120 miles south of San Francisco. With beautiful coastal scenery, abundant wildlife, uncrowded beaches, and a myriad of outdoor activities this city offers something for everyone. Numerous boutique stores, hotels, and restaurants along the waterfront in Cannery Row and Fisherman’s Wharf make downtown Monterey perfect for a dreamy weekend stroll!

If you’re headed to California any time soon, hats off to you, you know exactly when to leave the wet and cold! If not, we hope you live vicariously through this short guide and hopefully plan an escape later this year. Your soul will thank you!

This locally owned specialty coffee shop in downtown Monterey hit the spot with their espresso. Just what we needed on our way out of town for a drive to Big Sur. We are biased to Portland coffee but Captain + Stoker sure served a fine cup!

Located in the historic Cooper Molera Adobe site, Alta occupies what was once the corner store of the adobe complex. All the scrumptious goods at this neighborhood bakery are made fresh in-house everyday. Absolutely worth a stop!

A local organic cafe and cannery. As a team of four, this was a perfect spot for a quick bite and a little something to bring home. Jams and pickles? Yes, please! We found the team pressing cider when we visited and thought you should see, too!

If you’re in or around the Monterey Bay Aquarium, check out their renowned restaurant. All ingredients are sourced from local farmers, ranchers and fishermen who use environmentally responsible practices. All their seafood is caught or farmed in ways that don’t harm the ocean. Our absolute jam!

Organic, handcrafted ice cream handmade daily in small batches. We are in for anything that makes life sweeter and is made sustainably! Make sure you try their signature flavor “Bees Knees” which combines local Monterey honey, beeswax and bee pollen with organic custard and honeycomb candy. Also ask about their seasonal flavors. You’ll be surprised at how unique they are!

A simple neighborhood bar off the beaten path in downtown Monterey, and a true favorite for locals and visitors alike. Their philosophy is “Get a good drink and have a good time.” We’re all for that, especially at places approved by locals!
